The intensification of land use surrounding lakes globally is impacting the health of these water bodies to an alarming degree.
The Rotorua Lakes are an example of this. Nutrient is the main cause of the eutrophication and with the natural inputs of geothermal phosphorus means the reversal of the problems is no small task.
Benefits
The Floating Treatment Wetlands have provided a concentrated wetland effect in a lake that is surrounded by porous pumice soils. Creating land based wetlands in this landscape is not really possible as the streams are short and the lakes are largely fed by ground water.
The Floating Wetland is a habitat source for fish and birds.
